The Finals Review.  These days, new free-to-play first-person shooters are released practically every other month, and getting noticed by gamers takes a bit more.

Judging by the player count numbers, it seems that The Finals has done most things right. Here’s what we think about it and whether you should consider getting into it.

The What?

The Finals is an action-packed, free-to-play first-person shooter that brings a unique take to the genre, where instead of two teams fighting against each other or multiple teams pitted against each other in a Battle Royale style game mode, there are three or four teams of three, fighting for one objective.

The objective and number of teams depend on the game mode you’re playing, with the first being Cashout and the other being Bank It. In the Cashout game mode, each team must get to a cash box, deposit it in a cashout location, and then wait for the cash deposit to complete.

Other teams can attack as you take the cash box or during the deposit process. Even in the last second of the deposit process, opponents can steal it and deposit all the cash for themselves.

In the Bank It game mode, each player holds cash and can deposit it in the cashout location. When a player dies, the cash drops on the ground as coins for everyone to pick up.

Both game modes in The Finals do a great job of keeping players on edge and preventing the combat from getting stagnant at one location, especially thanks to the changing cashout locations.

The spectator sport-style announcer adds to the overall immersion of the game, making players feel like they are gladiators in the Coliseum.

As for the gameplay, you can think of it as Call of Duty meets Battlefield, with the fast-paced, close-quarter combat resembling Call of Duty games and the incredible destruction, levolution, and weapon feel from Battlefield games.

However, thanks to other gameplay elements, The Finals stands out as a unique game.

The When – The Finals Review

The Finals had one of the most successful game launches, even though the official release did not get bundled with excessive marketing or hype. The first time gamers got to play the game was on the 26th of October, 2023, when a beta version for The Finals went live.

A couple of weeks later, the developers released the full game on the 7th of December, 2023, surprising all gamers expecting another beta release.

According to the Steam charts for the game, it reached an all-time peak of nearly 250,000 concurrent players, with the current average being around 60,000 to 120,000 players.

Considering the fact that there hasn’t been a sharp decline in the player count and that the game is currently hovering around player numbers that even Tripple-A titles would be happy with, we can safely conclude that The Finals was a success, at least at launch.

However, we’ll have to wait and see if players stick to the game several months down the line.

Final Verdict

The Finals took the risk and did something unique with the FPS genre, and from the looks of it, they’re in the right direction since players love the game.

You should try it out, especially if you are into fast-paced games like Call of Duty or Battlefield.
